Philip had been washed ashore on the tropical island of Lanai after his family's yacht had sunk, leaving him an orphan. He grew up there with the housekeeper's daughter and eventually they fell in love. They were planning to be married when Betsy's mother died. A letter from her mother is posthumously delivered to London and a few months later, Betsy discovers she is the daughter of a Lord. Seeing that Betsy has everything, a native girl plots to keep Betsy from marrying Philip, who she wants for herself.
