After the Allied conquest of Sicily in 1943, Italian refugees arrive from the mainland to escape the Germans. Irma is one of the refugees and she desperately tries to find her fiance, but there is no word of him. Despite the risks, she decides to return to Italy to find him. An American soldier who had befriended her in Sicily insists on using his three day leave to accompany her.
