“Drummer Boy!”

Peter Porkchops plays doctor on this charming 1958 DC cover, as our pint-sized pig hero — stethoscope at the ready and sporting a doctor's mirror on his head — examines a wide-mouthed wolf named Wolfie with the cheerful command, "Now, take a deep breath, Wolfie!" Colorful pieces of fruit appear to be flying straight into the hapless wolf's gaping maw, adding a wonderfully absurd comedic twist to the examination scene. Rube Grossman's clean, expressive linework gives both characters tremendous personality, and at just ten cents this issue is a delightful snapshot of DC's funny-animal comics at their most playful.
