Joan leaves her impoverished coal town for the city, hoping “to marry a man with money.” She agrees to date lonely soldier Ted, although he isn’t rich enough for her. They fall in love but she says “I can’t afford the poor in love act.” After they part, Joan realizes she does love Ted after all and decides to apologize. She then learns he’s actually wealthy and Ted thinks this is why she changed her mind. A year later, Ted returns from the service and says Joan’s roommate told him the truth about Joan's decision. They will now wed.
