"Patches and the Tiger-Lion" follows a group of boys called the "Secret Seven" who venture to a state park for a picnic and zoo visit. When they hear mysterious roaring sounds coming from the woods near the zoo, Patches investigates and discovers a tiger-lion—a rare new animal at the zoo—has escaped and is in pain. After attempting a rescue, Patches encounters a suspicious old man in the woods, and the story culminates with the discovery that someone has set a trap in the area, forcing Patches to find a way to help the injured animal and outwit the mysterious figure.
