Della “from the wrong side of the tracks” sets out to get a prom invitation from wealthy student Bruce, rejecting studious but poor Tony. Della doesn’t care that girls who date Bruce get bad reputations. On the night of the prom, Bruce is speeding; he and Della believe he has hit someone with his car, but Bruce refuses to stop. At the prom, Della confesses to Tony, who drives to the scene of the accident and returns with “evidence.” Bruce blames everything on Della, who now sees him for what he is and knows Tony is the guy for her. The “victim” is revealed to be just a scarecrow.
