“Space Jail”

Rod Reis renders the whole gang in a wonderfully chaotic tableau for this second issue of Jonathan Hickman's revived New Mutants — a red-haired mutant swings from a cable overhead while her teammates cluster below in various states of alarm, a green creature crouches at their feet, one figure conjures crackling blue energy, and an ominous shadow looms in the foreground, all as someone hopefully utters "Hi?" The story is titled "Space Jail," which tells you pretty much everything you need to know about the kind of trouble this team has gotten themselves into. It's a genuinely fun cover that balances humor and tension with the confident, vibrant linework Reis brings throughout.
