"The Nebbs" by Hess follows two young boys who stumble upon enemy prisoners being hired to commit sabotage, discovering a plot involving time bombs placed on logs destined for a dam. After following footprints to Herman Boring's house during a storm, the boys are forced to stay the night and overhear a conversation revealing the sabotage scheme. They attempt to stop the explosives before the logs reach the dam but fail to prevent the dynamite from detonating. A subsequent story, "The Gag Bag," depicts a comedic ferry mishap where a character narrowly escapes jumping into the water when a ferry unexpectedly begins pulling away from the dock.
