About this Issue

New Avengers (vol. 3) #8 is the cameo debut of the Black Order — Thanos's elite cadre of alien enforcers, including Proxima Midnight, Corvus Glaive, Ebony Maw, Black Dwarf, and Supergiant — making it the first issued appearance of characters who would become cornerstones of both the 'Infinity' crossover event and the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Avengers: Infinity War (2018). The issue also functions as the crucial 'Infinity' prelude within Jonathan Hickman's years-long, architecturally designed Avengers saga, escalating the Illuminati's moral crisis as the Wakanda-Atlantis war reaches a boiling point and an Inhuman learns of the group's secret plans. Its narrative function — bridging the incursion threat of the earlier arc with the incoming Thanos invasion — makes it a keystone in one of the most ambitious, plot-dense runs in modern Marvel history, one whose structural payoff extended all the way through 2015's Secret Wars.

History

Jonathan Hickman launched New Avengers vol. 3 in January 2013 under the Marvel NOW! banner after concluding his celebrated Fantastic Four run, taking simultaneous control of both the main Avengers title and this series so that the two books could run as a coordinated, interlocking narrative. Issue #8, titled 'What Maximus Made,' was penciled and inked by Mike Deodato Jr. with colors by Frank Martin Jr. and lettering by Joe Caramagna, and was edited by Tom Brevoort and Lauren Sankovitch under editor-in-chief Axel Alonso. Though the Black Order had been conceptually developed by Hickman alongside artists Jim Cheung and Jerome Opeña for the forthcoming Infinity event, this issue — drawn by Deodato — served as their in-continuity cameo introduction, with the team's first full appearance arriving the following month in Infinity #1.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • First cameo appearance of the Black Order (also known as the Cull Obsidian) — Thanos's supervillain team consisting of Proxima Midnight, Corvus Glaive, Ebony Maw, Black Dwarf, and Supergiant — in comics continuity.
  • Written by Jonathan Hickman; art by Mike Deodato Jr.; colors by Frank Martin Jr.; letters by Joe Caramagna; cover date September 2013, on-sale July 24, 2013.
  • The Black Order (barring Supergiant) was later adapted into the MCU as the 'Children of Thanos' in Avengers: Infinity War (2018), played by Carrie Coon (Proxima Midnight), Tom Vaughan-Lawlor (Ebony Maw), Michael James Shaw (Corvus Glaive), and Terry Notary (Cull Obsidian, renamed from Black Dwarf).
  • Issue is titled 'What Maximus Made' and functions as the seventh core issue of the 56-issue Infinity event reading order according to League of Comic Geeks.
  • The story pivots on Black Bolt and Maximus completing a secret machine in Attilan, and on Medusa discovering that Black Bolt has been concealing his intentions from her — a subplot that feeds directly into the Inhumans' role in the Infinity event.
  • Tony Stark's recollection of discovering the fallen body of the Living Tribunal in space is depicted, tying the issue into the broader cosmic collapse Hickman was building across both Avengers titles.
  • The issue was collected in the Avengers by Jonathan Hickman: The Complete Collection Vol. 3 trade paperback (alongside Infinity #1–6 and Avengers #18–23), and also in the New Avengers by Jonathan Hickman Hardcover Vol. 1.
  • Supergiant's appearance in this issue is disputed between physical and digital editions: Key Collector Comics notes that Supergiant does not appear in the physical print copy of New Avengers #8 but does appear in the digital version.
