New Avengers #14

Tied into the Fear Itself crossover event, this 2011 issue of New Avengers arrives with one of the more unsettling covers of the run — a massive, lava-cracked creature with a grotesque, fang-rimmed maw dominates the image, wielding an enormous axe against a smoldering red sky. Mike Deodato Jr. renders the figure with tremendous weight and menace, the glowing fissures across its rocky hide giving it an almost volcanic, unstoppable quality. With Brian Michael Bendis writing and Rain Beredo's atmospheric colors amplifying the dread, this is a compelling entry in one of Marvel's biggest event tie-in runs of the year.
