Written by Brian Michael Bendis and penciled by David Finch — with inks by Danny Miki, colors by Frank D'Armata, and editing by Tom Brevoort under Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada — the issue carried a January 2005 cover date but actually shipped to comic shops in November 2004. It was conceived as the direct successor to 'Avengers Disassembled,' the storyline that had deliberately destroyed the previous Avengers status quo across The Avengers #500–503 and a finale one-shot, clearing the decks for Bendis to build something new. Bendis drew on characters he had personally developed in his earlier Marvel work — particularly Luke Cage and Jessica Jones from his crime noir series Alias, and Spider-Woman, who had appeared in that book's final arc — weaving those threads into a team book for the first time. A Director's Cut edition was also published simultaneously, packaging Bendis's full script alongside unlinked Finch pencils, alternate covers by Joe Quesada and Steve McNiven, and villain profile pages, establishing a behind-the-scenes format Marvel would revisit for other high-profile launches.
