Navy Task Force #5
☆ Be the first to review + Add to your collection — Join freeThis is an anthology comic featuring at least two stories. "Operation: Depth Charge" follows Navy operative Frank Boyle, who is recruited by Admiral Charles Thompson for a special mission involving a newly developed depth charge weapon to be deployed from a P.T. boat against German submarines threatening a vital Atlantic convoy. The second story, "Can Do!" depicts construction battalions of the Navy (Seabees) working to repair and build military installations, shown here engaging in combat operations on an island against enemy forces.
On a escort carrier in the Pacific, a fighter pilot named Jerry flies supply-run missions in his tiny "Jeep" fighter—until an enemy task force bears down on the invasion beaches with overwhelming firepower. When the admiral reveals that Jerry and his fellow pilots are all that stand between the Marines and annihilation, the young pilot must finally prove that even the smallest weapons can make the biggest difference. It's a taut carrier-war story that shows how determination and sacrifice count, no matter what you're flying.
When the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor cripples the American fleet, the Navy faces a desperate race to restore its damaged capital ships to fighting condition. Months later, as the tide of war turns and American forces push toward the Philippines, a bold Japanese plan attempts to draw away the U.S. Navy's protection—but the restored battleships are waiting to spring a trap in Surigao Strait. "Up from the Mud!" tells the story of how the ships that once lay helpless in the harbor return to deal a devastating blow to the enemy fleet.
A misfit Landing Craft Infantry commissioned from scrap steel proves itself far more valuable than anyone—least of all her reluctant captain—ever imagined when she leads an assault on an enemy-held beach in the South Pacific. Though she's battered and ungainly, this workhorse of a vessel takes hit after hit while delivering her Marines to the shore, earning the captain's grudging respect in the process. A straightforward wartime tale about finding unexpected worth in the most unlikely places.
When a Seabee's quick thinking eliminates a sniper holding up the Marines' advance, it sparks an unlikely partnership between the construction battalion and the fighting men—but their real test comes when the Marines find themselves pinned down in reinforced enemy positions with no way out. The Seabees answer the call with an improvised solution that proves their "Can Do" spirit extends far beyond building airstrips, cementing a mutual respect between two branches of the Navy fighting the same war on different fronts.
