Navy Task Force #2

The young new captain of the U.S.S. Hughes, a man still grieving the loss of his wife, faces skepticism from his crew after making a series of baffling decisions during a battle with enemy submarines and aircraft. As the ship’s executive officer struggles to understand his commander’s choices, the crew gradually realizes that the captain’s actions—though seemingly reckless—were driven by a deeper commitment to protecting the larger convoy, even at great personal risk.

The story follows LST #816, a landing ship born from a junk pile, as it journeys from being an abandoned hulk to playing a crucial role in a military assault. As it carries troops ashore under fire, the ship experiences a surge of purpose and pride—only to be damaged and ultimately destroyed in battle, returning to the junk pile as its final resting place.

A ruthless Japanese submarine commander, known only as the Shark, takes grim pleasure in sinking Allied ships and eliminating survivors, even from a hospital ship. His crew, increasingly revolted by his cruelty, plot against him, culminating in a desperate act that turns his own trophies against him. When he surfaces to confront an American sub chaser, his reign of terror ends in a shocking twist — the very blood he spilled attracts the beast he once admired.

Dave Zorn is a bitter, isolated sailor despised by his shipmates, who see him as a reckless troublemaker—until a kamikaze attack threatens the fleet. When the enemy plane heads straight for their destroyer, Zorn stays at his gun turret, firing relentlessly even as the ship is engulfed in flames, ultimately sacrificing himself. His final act of courage reveals a hidden depth beneath his anger, leaving his crew stunned and reevaluating everything they thought they knew about him.
