Written and illustrated by Nathan Hale, this issue offers a vivid, grounded look at the formative experiences that shaped one of the Revolution’s most enduring figures, all rendered in Hale’s distinctive, expressive style. The cover, also by Hale, captures the quiet intensity of a moment before the storm.

In Lafayette's absence, Baron von Steuben has trained the American army into a significant fighting force. As the British withdraw from Philadelphia across New Jersey, Washington orders Lafayette to harry the enemy's rear guard. But General Charles Lee demands command of the van as Lafayette's superior in rank, begins his attack late, then inexplicably orders a headlong retreat. Washington and Lafayette take command on the field, resume the attack, and after long fierce fighting win a flawed victory. As night falls they sleep side by side on the ground.
