“There Grows a Rose”

From Atlas Comics' "All New Mystic Tales" comes this 1955 anthology with a genuinely unsettling cover by Carl Burgos: a massive footprint-shaped crater has split open the desert earth, drawing a crowd of onlookers, police cars, and uniformed officers to its rim while a group of figures descends deeper and deeper into its glowing, shadowy depths. The tagline "What Really Happened in Strange Valley?" promises exactly the kind of strange-and-unusual mystery this series delivered so well in the mid-1950s. Interior art by Tony DiPreta rounds out an issue that captures Atlas at its eerie, imaginative best.
