Mystery Tales #18 is an anthology containing the story "Terror from the Tombs," in which Spanish conquistadors brutally massacre peaceful Incan villagers seeking their gold, and an ancient Incan curse awakens to punish the invaders' descendants centuries later. The issue also includes "The Spectres in Shaft 13," featuring miners who discover mysterious supernatural hands and hairy creatures in a mine shaft and must determine whether the phenomena are human or something more sinister. Additional shorter humorous anecdotes and oddities round out the issue.

The Curse of Khar
6 pp · Horror-Suspense

Two London thieves, Gip and Davie, duck into a mysterious house to escape pursuing police and find themselves face-to-face with Khar, a strange fortune-teller who peers into a seven-pointed star and reveals that he knows of their crimes—and worse, that they will both die under the sign of the star. When they silence Khar and steal the glowing artifact, they discover the curse may be far more real than they bargained for as a spectral terror pursues them through the darkened streets and sewers of London. The final reckoning comes at the river's edge, where the seven-pointed star seems to exact its terrible price.

The Spectres in Shaft 13
8 pp · Horror-Suspense

Three amateur fossil hunters exploring an abandoned iron mine in northern New Jersey stumble upon something far more sinister than ghost stories when they discover a petrified human arm reaching from the tunnel wall—and evidence that something inhuman lurks behind the stone. When Roger brings the arm to Lieutenant Bryce at a nearby naval station, their investigation into the mine's dark secrets uncovers a hidden tunnel that hasn't appeared on any map in forty years. What began as a supernatural mystery becomes a race against time as the truth behind Shaft 13 and the forces guarding it threaten to silence them all.

Terror from the Tombs
6 pp · Horror-Suspense

In sixteenth-century Peru, young Don Cristobal abandons the Spanish conquistadors to defend the Incas, earning mystical powers that make him their champion—until betrayal and murder seal him in an eternal tomb. Four centuries later, an American professor and his daughter discover the sealed crypt and unwittingly awaken something the blood-soaked Incan curse has kept preserved, waiting for a reckoning that transcends death itself.

Murder by Myth
5 pp · Horror-Suspense

When a replica of Medusa's head becomes a weapon of Cold War espionage, international troubleshooter Dan Clayton of the OSS must track down the Soviet assassin using it to eliminate high-level targets across America. The killer relies on shock and mythology to strike down his victims, but Clayton is made of sterner stuff—and he's determined to uncover the grim conspiracy before more blood spills.
