17-year-old Ellen decides to elope with her boyfriend Harold. Her mother Claire says she did the same thing when she was a teen, marrying Gordon. However, his family has the marriage annulled and Gordon agrees because he needs their financial support. Claire goes to work to support herself but is fired when it is discovered that she’s pregnant. After her baby’s birth, Claire gets a job with the aid of cabbie Bill. They fall in love and Bill willingly accepts Claire’s child as his own. Ellen tells her mother that she’s not going to elope with Harold after all.
