“Affairs of the Heart”

In "Affairs of the Heart," Bernice, a determined aspiring veterinarian, faces skepticism from her male peers—except for Ray, her kindred spirit. When a mysterious cattle epidemic strikes, Ray’s expertise is called in, but Bernice, convinced her struggles are due to gender bias, rejects his help, only to see the crisis worsen. The emotional weight of her choices leads to a reckoning, and in a quiet moment of redemption, Ray offers her a second chance. Cover by Maurice Whitman, with lettering by Ed Hamilton.

Bernice is studying to become a veterinarian and ignores the “derision” of her male classmates. The exception is Ray; they date and when they graduate Bernice and Ray work in adjoining counties. Bernice doesn’t know the cause of a cattle epidemic and is irritated when Ray is called in and solves the mystery. Bernice thinks this is because she’s a woman, and she ignores his remedy. The disease spreads. To clear herself, Bernice blames this on Ray and he’s fired. Bernice admits her guilt and loses her own job. Ray, reinstated, offers her the job as his assistant and she accepts.
