Written and illustrated by Louis Zansky, this heartfelt 1949 tale unfolds with quiet emotional depth, while Sid Greene’s cover captures the bittersweet tension of its central romance.

Fred marries Mary on her 18th birthday; she discovers that, like her father, he's a nasty drunk. Fred dies, and Mary raises their child on her own. Mary moves home to help care for her mother, and gets a job but refuses to date any of her co-workers. She changes her mind when Tom asks her out. However, when she tells him she's a widowed mother, he says "I can't marry you now." Mary agrees to wed Mr. Hunt, the company president, an older man. Tom explains he had to get a promotion before he could support a family: he can afford to marry Mary now. Mr. Hunt releases Mary from her obligation.
