Sally’s father leaves the family when she is young, and her mother raises her to distrust all men. Sally dates many men but her mother always finds fault with them. When wealthy Allen and Sally get serious, her mother tries to break them up: Sally angrily shoves her mother, who falls down a flight of stairs and is paralyzed. Sally must now support and care for her mother, “a prisoner for life.”
