“I Can't Love Anyone!”

Marvel's My Love series delivered genuine emotional drama, and issue #19 from September 1972 is a fine example of the line at its most charged. John Romita's cover captures a tearful blonde woman pulling away from a dark-haired young man who grips her arm, her speech bubbles crying "No! No! Stay away! Let me go!" and "Can't you see it's too late? Haven't I suffered enough?" — all set against a crowd scene complete with a photographer and a "Welcome Home" sign that adds a bittersweet public dimension to the confrontation. The bold cover blurb — "I Can't Love Anyone!" — sets the emotional stakes perfectly for the interior stories crafted by Anne Spencer, Paty, John Tartaglione, and Denise Wohl.
