“I Was a Stepmother at Twenty”

In "I Was a Stepmother at Twenty," a 1948 Fox comic story written by Ken Fitch, a high school football game sets off a chain of events that upends Faith Jordan’s life. As her romance with a classmate unravels and a tragic accident follows a wild night out, Faith must face the consequences of her choices while rebuilding her life. The story, told in stark, emotionally charged panels, captures a moment of personal reckoning with quiet power—cover by an unknown artist.

At a Grenville High football game, Faith Jordan ignores her date Larry, and flirts with football hero, Tommy Knight. Schoolmate Kate seethes with jealousy. Following the game, Faith and Larry drink heavily at the Idle Moments Lounge. The police raid the joint, and Faith and Larry flee. As they speed away in Larry's car, a pedestrian is hit and killed. Kate tips-off the police and Faith is arrested. Eventually, she is released with a warning but Larry is sent to a reformatory. Faith's father has died during the turmoil in her life so she leaves school and gets a factory job to support her mother. In doing so, she regains some of her self respect. Football hero Tommy re-enters her life, declares his love, and they marry.
