Secretary Ruth’s husband Tom often works at night. She’s bored and worries he takes her for granted. Ruth meets Bill, who’s dating her friend Lena, and they both “feel a powerful bond between” them. They begin an affair and Ruth asks Tom for a divorce. Afterwards, she continues to see Bill but he never asks her to marry him. Ruth learns from Lena that Bill is already married. Ruth goes back to Tom but he says “my love for you died” when he learned she’d been unfaithful. He and Lena are now engaged. Ruth knows “I had to pay for my folly with a broken heart.”
