Mundi Comics Super Héroes Presenta #37

Feb 1976 · Ediciones Vértice · 35 SPA
“¡A sembrar las semillas de la muerte!”
About this Issue

This issue brought the team-up of Spider-Man and the Punisher to Spanish-speaking readers for the first time through Ediciones Vértice's Mundi Comics line, making it the Spanish-language debut of that pairing. For a generation of Spanish readers, the 'Super Héroes Presenta' series was the primary gateway to Marvel's expanding roster of characters, and this entry introduced El Castigador (The Punisher) into that shared reading experience at a moment when the character was still a relative newcomer in the United States. As part of Vértice's sustained effort to domesticate the Marvel universe for Spain's market, it represents a culturally distinct chapter in how Marvel's 1970s team-up formula traveled across the Atlantic.

In "¡A sembrar las semillas de la muerte!", Spider-Man crosses paths with Dr. Strange when he intervenes to stop two henchmen sent by Xandu to steal half of the Wand of Watoomb. What starts as a mistaken identity quickly evolves into an unlikely alliance as the web-slinger and the Sorcerer Supreme join forces to thwart Xandu’s growing threat. With art by Steve Ditko and a cover by Gil Kane and López Espí, this 1976 Mundi Comics issue delivers a classic clash of street-level grit and mystical intrigue.

History

The *Super Héroes* V.2 series was launched by Ediciones Vértice in 1974 to solve a specific editorial problem: titles like Marvel Team-Up and Marvel Spotlight were appearing in the United States but didn't have enough individual content to justify their own standalone Spanish series. Vértice created 'Super Héroes Presenta' as an anthology umbrella to house this material, with black-and-white interiors and a color cover. Issue #37 reprints the story 'To Sow the Seeds of Death's Day!' originally published as Giant-Size Spider-Man #4 (January 1975 release), written by Gerry Conway with pencils by Ross Andru and inks by Mike Esposito, and edited by Len Wein.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Spanish title: 'A Sembrar las Semillas de la Muerte' — a direct translation of the Giant-Size Spider-Man #4 (1975) story title 'To Sow the Seeds of Death's Day!'
  • Source material: Giant-Size Spider-Man #4 (cover date April 1975), written by Gerry Conway, penciled by Ross Andru, inked by Mike Esposito, edited by Len Wein.
  • Featured characters: Spider-Man (Peter Parker) and The Punisher (El Castigador in Vértice's Spanish translation).
  • Published by Ediciones Vértice under its Mundi Comics imprint in 1976 as part of the Super Héroes V.2 series.
  • Format: black-and-white interior pages with a color cover, standard for the Super Héroes V.2 run.
  • The Super Héroes V.2 series drew primarily from Marvel Team-Up and Marvel Two-In-One, serving as Vértice's anthology vehicle for Marvel material that lacked its own dedicated Spanish series.
  • The series ran to at least 134 issues, with Spider-Man appearing throughout as the most frequent lead character across the run.
  • The Punisher was still a relatively new Marvel character at the time of original US publication (first appearance 1974), making this one of his earliest appearances in Spanish-language comics.
