Desde pequeña Adriana Lecouvreur mostró dotes para la actuación, se mudó a Paris con su familia donde después de pasar por pequeñas compañías de teatro, debutó en La Comedia Francesa alcanzando gran renombre nacional. Mantuvo un romance con Mauricio de Sajonia. Mauricio era un mujeriego empedernido y se aprovechó del dinero de Adriana, llegando incluso ésta a solventarle sus derechos al título de Duque; al mismo mismo cortejaba a la Duquesa de Bouillon, quien enterada de su romance con Adriana, atentó contra su vida. Sin embargo nunca se pudo probar su culpabilidad en la muerte de Adriana.
