A brooding, battle-worn swordsman crouches on the cover of this late-series volume, his weathered frame and drawn katana suggesting someone who has survived far more than any ordinary warrior should. Creator Hiroaki Samura renders the figure with striking painterly detail — torn clothing, scattered petals or snow drifting around him — conveying both exhaustion and coiled danger in equal measure. Volume 28 of Blade of the Immortal is a compelling entry in one of manga's most visually distinctive samurai epics.
