Ms. Tree #1
☆ Be the first to review + Add to your collection — Join freeThis volume collects the earliest adventures of hard-boiled female private eye Ms. Tree, originally published in the 1980s by Eclipse Comics. Written by Max Allan Collins and illustrated by Terry Beatty, the stories follow the tough, no-nonsense detective as she navigates a world of crime and corruption. 'One Mean Mother' kicks off the series with a gritty, noir-infused narrative that established Ms. Tree as a landmark character in independent comics.
In "Gift of Death," Ms. Tree reunites with her high school sweetheart, William "Billy" Powers, now a wealthy real estate tycoon on the edge of divorce and financial ruin. When his wife storms in with a gun, Ms. Tree acts in self-defense—but soon uncovers a chilling truth: the confrontation was staged, and Billy’s intentions were far more complex than she imagined. Written by Max Allan Collins and illustrated by Terry Beatty, with colors by Tom Ziuko and letters by Gary Kato, this issue blends tense personal drama with a sharp, noir-tinged mystery. Denys Cowan’s striking cover captures the moment’s raw intensity.

Ms. Tree runs into a high school sweetheart, William "Billy" Powers, who is now an unhappily married wealthy real estate tycoon. He is on the verge of divorce, and is having business problems. When his wife bursts in on them wielding a gun, Ms. Tree kills her in self-defense. As she investigates, however, she realizes Powers staged the whole scenario with the intent of having Tree kill his wife. She confronts him, and he claims he has fallen in love with her for real. He is then shot and killed by his executive assistant, who helped him with his scheme because she thought he loved her.
