Monte Hale Western #83

Monte Hale encounters a scheme involving booby-trapped boots designed with secret-like and drill-hole heels that, when detonated, could win the Alamo Grand Prize. After Ringo suggests Monte jump from a bucking horse to land hard on his heels and detonate the device, Monte's boots slip to the floor against a hot stove, causing an explosion. When Monte returns, he discovers that bank robbers have stolen money twice in recent weeks, and the gang leader Badmen Broken has made off with all the funds; Monte agrees to help recover the money and apprehend the criminals.
