Volume 3 of Yoshihiko Inui's Monster Friends keeps the series' wonderfully absurd energy going strong, with a cover featuring two oddball creatures — a gangly, top-hat-wearing green monster dressed in a dapper suit and a squat, toad-like brawler sporting boxing gloves and a crown — squaring off against a backdrop of cheerful blood-red splatter. The contrast between their ridiculous charm and the implied mayhem is exactly the kind of delightful contradiction that makes this series so hard to put down. Published by Komikku Éditions in 2017, this is the sort of manga that wears its monster-friendship chaos proudly on its sleeve.
