Modern Mechanics and Inventions was founded in 1928 by Fawcett Publications as a monthly popular-science and do-it-yourself magazine headquartered in New York City, launched to compete with Popular Science and Popular Mechanics. The title spelling changed from 'Mechanics' to 'Mechanix' with the August 1932 issue — making Vol. 8 #5 (September 1932) only the second issue to carry the 'Mechanix' masthead — and the publication ran until May 1938, when it was relaunched as Mechanix Illustrated. Charles Roman had joined Atlas's business in 1929 after buying out co-founder Frederick Tilney, and together Roman and Atlas were actively placing fitness ads in pulp magazines throughout 1932, the same year Atlas copyrighted several of his signature advertising slogans including 'Insult that Made a Man out of Mac' and 'Let Me Give You a Body that Men Respect and Women Admire.'
