When Nickola Brown arrives in town, she’s swept into a taxi by a stranger who calls out that his fiancée has arrived—only to learn the man is Steve Barker, one of two brothers launching a TV casting agency. The brothers, Steve and Rod Barker, insist she become their personal secretary, plunging her into a whirlwind of unexpected duties and complicated dynamics.

Jane has always been the go-between for Roy Baker and other boys hoping to impress girls, never quite seen as more than a convenient link. At a dance, Ted seems different—kind, attentive—until his return from getting drinks, when something in his demeanor shifts. When he finally tells her there’s something he needs to ask, Jane can’t stay and flees into the night.
