Even though she loves Greg, Mary explains that she has to go back and marry Maynes for his money. Otherwise, her father will lose his ranch and her sick mother may die. Greg takes her back, but then she learns that Greg's horse knocked down Maynes and another man at the church. Maynes got a broken collar bone, but the other man will probably die. Mary tracks down Greg and persuades him to escape to the hills.
