Outlaw brothers Squint and Canute take their gang back to Buffalo Bend under cover of darkness, where they meet with a masked boss who orders them to eliminate Tex West—but stage it as a rustling raid so suspicion won't fall on them. As the Yaeger brothers head to Prairie City to establish an alibi, Tex rides back to warn the Slash D ranch of the incoming raiders, while a young woman named Bess secretly follows the conspirators into the night.

Newly sworn as Buffalo Bend's marshal, Tex West discovers a grim warning left in his office—and faces an even tougher test when a railroad superintendent demands he eliminate the Yaeger Gang within a fortnight or lose the town's chance at prosperity. With the community teetering on the edge of collapse and suspicious allies circling, Tex must navigate betrayal and violence to save Buffalo Bend from becoming a ghost town.
