Tex West, a cowboy marshal, confronts a band of ruthless outlaws at Buffalo Bend who have been terrorizing the town. When southern cattlemen passing through reveal they've been forced to take an alternate route to avoid trouble, Tex learns that the Yaeger boys—led by the cunning Squint Yaegers—have been extorting the townspeople and threatening to turn the settlement into a ghost town. Tex works to rally the merchants and townspeople to stand against the outlaws, ultimately driving them out and restoring order to Buffalo Bend.

Tex West accepts the marshal's badge for the troubled town of Buffalo Bend, despite warnings from those who came before him—and a mysterious woman's pleas to abandon the job. When an ambush on the trail suggests someone wants him dead before he can even start, Tex realizes the real danger may come from closer to home than the outlaw gangs ravaging the territory.

Outlaw brothers Squint and Canute take their gang back to Buffalo Bend under cover of darkness, where they meet with a masked boss who orders them to eliminate Tex West—but stage it as a rustling raid so suspicion won't fall on them. As the Yaeger brothers head to Prairie City to establish an alibi, Tex rides back to warn the Slash D ranch of the incoming raiders, while a young woman named Bess secretly follows the conspirators into the night.
