Jack and Milton both desire Louise and ascend the ranks of the US Cavalry, hoping to win her. When she tells each man she's chosen him in a separate letter the two decide to settle the matter in a duel, but the experiences they've had slaughtering natives have unsettled both men and each hopes to be killed. When both men deliberately avoid killing the other, they finally accept each other as friends.
