Maxwell's Demons #1
"Witches' Brew" kicks off Maxwell's Demons #1 with a hauntingly intimate story of isolation and transformation. Written by Deniz Camp and illustrated by Vittorio Astone—whose distinctive art style brings Max’s eerie, handmade world to life—this issue introduces a boy who crafts sentient playmates and a mysterious portal, only to be taken in by Corvus for training. Cover by Nathan Gooden captures the story’s unsettling tone, setting the stage for a journey where loyalty is tested and the line between creation and control blurs.

Max and his father live alone. To pass time, the boy invents animatronic, talking playmates and a portal. Corvus arrives one day to take Max for guidance and training. Months of training pass and they are pursued by The Leviathan. When Corvus sets Max to battle The Leviathan to the death, Max quickly builds a weapon out of parts from his playmates and stuns The Leviathan. Thinking it dead, Corvus reveals his betrayal. Max makes The Leviathan kill Corvus, as the beast can be commanded as a manifestation of his subconscious. Max builds a portal home and builds a new playmate, Leibniz.
