The 'Dark Reflections' series was produced by the comic studio MVCreations — founded in part by artist Emiliano Santalucia, who had been involved with the MOTU franchise since the 2002 relaunch — and published through Image Comics as the second of three connected mini-series tied to Mattel's 2002 toy line and the Mike Young Productions animated series. Writer Val Staples, who also handled coloring duties, scripted all six issues and maintained the same core creative team (Santalucia on pencils, Enza Fontana assisting on art, Dreamer Design on letters) that carried over from the first series, 'The Shard of Darkness.' The arc launched in March 2003 and ran through mid-2003, with covers split between a standard Santalucia/Staples version (Cover A) and a premium Cover B by celebrated movie-poster illustrator Drew Struzan, continuing the variant strategy that had distinguished the first Image series.
