“Black Sun Lives!”

Few team-ups in 1976 felt quite as unexpected as this one: the cover by Ron Wilson (pencils) and Joe Sinnott (inks) plants the rocky orange mass of the Thing shoulder-to-shoulder with the supremely capable Doc Savage, both men surging forward through a field of shattered debris with fists ready and expressions locked in fierce determination. The cover copy puts it plainly — "the greatest heroes of two eras fighting side-by-side against the deadly menace of Black Sun!" — and the image delivers on that promise with real kinetic energy. With interior work from writer Bill Mantlo and artist Ron Wilson, this is a satisfying slice of Bronze Age Marvel that brings together two very different worlds of adventure.
