“The Big Time”

The cover of this 1981 Marvel Spotlight issue poses a deliciously ironic question: what happens when a cat burglar becomes Captain Universe? Steve Ditko's cover art frames the answer perfectly — a looming feline silhouette casts its shadow over a group of grinning criminals gleefully grabbing fistfuls of cash from a table, while the cosmic-suited Captain Universe stands below them, star gleaming on their chest. The story promises to be called "Claws of the Cat," and with Bill Mantlo writing and Ditko handling both pencils and inks, this crime-meets-cosmic mashup looks like a genuinely entertaining ride through Marvel's Uni-Power mythology.
