These issues, written by Stan Lee and illustrated by Steve Ditko, establish the mystical corner of the Marvel Universe with iconic stories featuring Dormammu, the Ancient One, and the introduction of key magical concepts. The collection captures the psychedelic, otherworldly atmosphere that defined Ditko's groundbreaking run on the character.
In "Dr. Strange, Master of Black Magic!", the Sorcerer Supreme is summoned by a man plagued by terrifying dreams—dreams that lead Strange into the surreal realm of Nightmare. As the boundaries between reality and the dream world blur, Strange uncovers a hidden truth buried in the man’s subconscious, forcing a confrontation that reveals the guilt behind the nightmares.
In his European castle, Baron Mordo schemes to steal the secrets of his former master, the Ancient One, sending his spirit to Tibet to poison the old sorcerer’s food. From his New York sanctum, Doctor Strange senses the danger and answers Mordo’s challenge with a battle waged in spirit form. As the clash unfolds, the Ancient One warns Strange that Mordo remains a threat—forever.
In "Return to the Nightmare World!", Doctor Strange is called upon when a wave of sleepers won’t wake, their minds trapped in a realm only he can reach. Tracking the mystery to the Nightmare World, he faces his ancient foe once more—this time not just to save the lost, but to uncover the source of a nightmare that’s grown too real.
In "The Many Traps of Baron Mordo!", Mordo casts a spell that vanishes Strange’s house in a burst of arcane energy, pulling it into another dimension. Strange pursues him through the veil of reality, only to find himself ensnared in Mordo’s labyrinthine lair, where every path leads deeper into deception. When Mordo turns on The Ancient One under false pretenses, Strange’s earlier escape—through the Earth’s core—has already given his mentor the edge needed to face the threat. The battle ends in defeat for Mordo, but the cost is clear: his power grows with every scheme.
In "The Possessed!", Strange uses his Earthly Scanner to detect a surge of evil in Bavaria, leading him to a remote village where the townspeople are eerily controlled—seemingly by a supernatural force. As he investigates, he uncovers a chilling truth: the possession is the work of alien beings from another dimension, using the village as a foothold. With his wits and magic, Strange confronts the intruders, drives them back, and closes the rift that threatened to spill their influence into our world.
In "Beyond the Purple Veil!", Doctor Strange ventures into the surreal realm of the Purple Veil to rescue two thieves caught in its grasping dimension, only to face Aggamon, the all-powerful ruler who reigns over its crimson skies and shifting illusions.
In "The House of Shadows!", Doctor Strange investigates a supposedly haunted house where a TV crew is preparing to broadcast live—only to find the place resists his mystical senses. When the signal cuts out, he enters in person and uncovers a chilling truth: the house itself is alive, pulsing with ancient, hidden power.
In "Witchcraft in the Wax Museum!", Doctor Strange finds himself trapped in ectoplasmic form after a mysterious phone call draws him away from his body—only to discover Baron Mordo has stolen it and cast a spell to keep him from returning. With time running out, Strange uses his amulet to track Mordo’s trail to a sinister wax museum, where he must outwit his foe in a battle of wits and magic. The story unfolds with tense, supernatural stakes as Strange confronts Mordo in a realm where illusion and reality blur.
In "The World Beyond," Doctor Strange, drained from his battles with the supernatural, slips into sleep without securing his defenses—only to find himself trapped in the Nightmare World, a realm where his greatest fears take shape. Nightmare, the ancient entity who has long feared Strange’s power, holds him captive, amused by the irony of the hero’s vulnerability. With cunning and a touch of psychological mastery, Strange summons the ever-wakeful Gulgol, forcing Nightmare to confront a truth he cannot bear—though the real victory lies not in the creature, but in the mind that outwitted the nightmare all along.
In "The Challenge of Loki!", Dr. Strange masters the art of levitation when Loki, God of Mischief from Asgard, reaches out with a cunning deception. Pretending Thor is a tyrant imprisoning him, Loki manipulates Strange into stealing Thor’s hammer—only for the sorcerer to sense no evil within it. Realizing he’s been tricked, Strange confronts Loki, who vows revenge.
In "The Lady from Nowhere!", Doctor Strange encounters a mysterious woman wandering the streets, ensnared by a powerful spell. Guided by his mentor, he journeys into Ancient Egypt to confront the sorcerer Zota, who cast the spell in defiance of Cleopatra’s choice. With time running out and the candle’s flame flickering, Strange must outwit the past’s dangers and return her home before the magic consumes him.
In "Mordo Must Not Catch Me!", Stephen Strange finds himself in a desperate race across the globe after Mordo captures The Ancient One. With the Eye of Agamotto and his amulet as his only allies, Strange battles Mordo in ghostly form, chasing him from his sanctum to a hidden jungle in Tibet. The stakes are high, the tension relentless, and the outcome hangs in the balance as Strange fights to save his mentor before it's too late.
In "The Domain of the Dread Dormammu!", Dr. Strange is summoned to the Ancient One’s side just as the mystical realm faces a dire threat: the Dread Dormammu prepares to leave his dimension and invade Earth. With his mentor too frail to confront the ancient sorcerer, Strange must journey into Dormammu’s realm, where he battles endless perils and encounters a mysterious girl who watches his progress in silence. As he finally faces Dormammu, Strange refuses to let the sorcerer harm the Ancient One—offering himself as the challenger instead.
In "Duel with the Dread Dormammu!", Stephen Strange is drawn into a deadly game of power and survival when a mysterious young woman leads him to the realm of the Soulless, monstrous beings bound by Dormammu’s will. With Cléa imprisoned and the barrier holding back the chaos crumbling, Dormammu must reluctantly join forces with Strange to stop the onslaught—only to find himself bound by the sorcerer’s terms: Cléa’s safety and exile from Earth. The story unfolds with high stakes and shifting alliances, as the fate of two worlds hangs in the balance.
In "The Demon's Disciple!", Dr. Strange answers a frantic call from a man who unknowingly pledged himself to a dark entity known only as The Demon. Trapped in a nightmare realm beneath the villain’s lair, the disciple’s fate hangs in the balance as Strange confronts the malevolent mystic in a battle of wills and ancient magic. With a final act of mystical cunning, Strange binds The Demon’s mind in a veil of forgotten truth, leaving only one certainty: the one who defeated him will be known when the veil is lifted.
In "Beware...Tiboro! The Tyrant of the Sixth Dimension!", three skeptical scientists dismiss Dr. Strange on a television panel, only to vanish when the lights go out—pulling the Sorcerer Supreme into a battle across dimensions. With the fate of Earth hanging in the balance, Strange confronts the malevolent force of Tiboro, a tyrant from a realm beyond our own, before weaving a spell to restore the men’s memories and silence their disbelief.
In "The Defeat of Dr. Strange!", Dr. Strange faces his darkest hour when Mordo, empowered by Dormammu, launches a relentless campaign to destroy him. With his mentor in hiding and spirits sent by Dormammu hunting him through Tibet and Hong Kong, Strange must rely on cunning and old allies to survive. As Mordo’s forces close in, Strange fights to stay one step ahead—outmaneuvering enemies, evading capture, and holding on to hope.
In the far East, the fugitive sorcerer Strange flees from Mordo and his relentless minions, unaware that Mordo’s growing power is tied to the dark forces of Dormammu. With a desperate plan to escape by plane to New York City, Strange must outwit the Wraiths who close in on him—using cunning and deception to vanish before they can capture him.
In "Face-to-Face at Last with Baron Mordo!", Dr. Strange returns to his Greenwich Village sanctum only to find it infiltrated by one of Mordo’s followers. As he tries to reclaim his sanctuary, a hidden trap activates, revealing a signal sent to Mordo—and to Dormammu—betraying his location. The battle that follows forces Strange to confront a Mordo whose power feels different, deeper, as the presence of Dormammu begins to manifest in ways he never expected.
In "A Nameless Land, a Timeless Time!", Stephen Strange finds himself adrift across endless dimensions after fleeing Mordo, only to crash into a realm ruled by the ruthless Shazana—once a sorceress who betrayed her mentor for power. When Shazana’s sister arrives, believing Strange is her ally, the two women clash, but Strange sees an opening: while imprisoned, he studies the land’s magic and uncovers the source of Shazana’s dominion, preparing to use it to return home—without revealing how.
In "Earth Be My Battleground," Dr. Strange returns to Earth in hiding, pursued by Mordo’s spirits, while Clea draws Dormammu’s attention by unleashing the Mindless Ones. As chaos unfolds, Strange makes a desperate flight into the sun, leaving Mordo uncertain of his fate. Back on Earth, the Ancient One, on the brink of death, murmurs the name "Eternity," and as Dormammu consolidates his power, Clea fears discovery—while Strange begins his search for the elusive force that may hold the key to it all.
In "Eternity Beckons!", Dr. Strange journeys to London, seeking answers about the enigmatic force known as Eternity, only to find himself welcomed by Sir Baskerville—a former ally of Mordo—whose cryptic knowledge hints at deeper conspiracies. As Dormammu plots revenge against Clea for freeing the Mindless Ones, Strange uncovers a web of deception that exposes Dormammu’s manipulation of Mordo, turning the sorcerer’s schemes into a trap of his own design.
In "What Lurks Beneath the Mask?", Stephen Strange races against time to save Clea from Dormammu’s grasp, following cryptic clues through the mystical underworld. With no answers from his allies and a dangerous trail leading to a forgotten prisoner in another dimension, Strange must confront the final, terrifying possibility: entering the mind of his long-dead mentor, The Ancient One.
In "When Meet the Mystic Minds!", Dr. Strange ventures into the depths of the unconscious mind of his mentor, the Ancient One, seeking the secret of Eternity. Traversing surreal mental landscapes filled with treacherous illusions, he must prove his identity and intentions to the guardian of his master’s innermost thoughts. After succeeding, Strange emerges to cast a legendary spell atop a Himalayan peak, summoning a portal that swallows his amulet—just as Mordo arrives, too late to stop him.
In *If Eternity Should Fail!*, Dr. Strange confronts the cosmic entity Eternity in a realm beyond comprehension, where he is tested for the trust of the Ancient One. With Mordo and Dormammu threatening all of mankind, Eternity reveals that Strange already possesses the power he needs—but when the sorcerer returns to find his master vanished, a desperate journey leads him to Mordo, who declares, “The game is lost!”
In "The Pincers of Power!", Strange, Mordo, and the Ancient One are thrust into a neutral dimension by Dormammu, who then uses a sleeping potion on the Mindless Ones to secure his domain. With nearby dimension rulers summoned and Earth’s fate hanging in the balance, Dormammu challenges Strange to a personal duel—fought not with magic, but only with the Pincers of Power, a test of pure skill. The battle rages with intensity, but just as Strange gains the upper hand, Mordo strikes from behind.
In "Let There Be Victory!", Stephen Strange stands alone against Dormammu’s growing threat, proving his strength when he defeats the dark lord in combat—only to face a new peril. With Clea vanished and the Mystic Globe pulsing with lingering evil, Strange must navigate a trap laid by Mordo’s Demon and his disciples, unaware of the bomb awaiting him.
