“Days of Future Past”

"Days of Future Past" delivers a pivotal moment in X-Men history, reimagining a dark alternate future through the eyes of Kitty Pryde—her consciousness briefly transported to a dystopian timeline where mutants are hunted. Written by John Byrne and Chris Claremont, with art by Byrne and inks by Terry Austin, this issue blends tense action with emotional weight, as Kitty’s future self helps the present-day X-Men thwart the Brotherhood’s assault on Senator Kelly. The cover by John Byrne captures the moment’s urgency, while the story sets the stage for a new era of mutant resistance, culminating in Senator Kelly’s decision to empower General Gyrich with Project Wideawake.

The Brotherhood makes its play against Senator Kelly. Kitty's future self, which is in possession of her present body, helps the X-Men defeat Mystique and her crew (thus changing the future). As soon as Kelly is saved, Kitty's psyche returns from the future to her own body. A month later, in response to the attack, Kelly puts Gyrich in charge of a top secret Sentinel program called "Project Wideawake."
