The story chronicles his transformation through a dangerous landing operation where an LCVP hits a reef, forcing Marines to swim ashore while under heavy fire. CPL Tanner fights his way to the surface and leads his men off the landing barge ramps, ultimately demonstrating courage despite his initial fearfulness, earning the respect of his fellow Marines through his actions in the combat zone.
