Due to construction, the footpath Carol normally uses to get to the bus is closed. However, the young man working there picks her up and carries her across a narrow plank. She doesn't look back, but it felt sort of right when she was in his arms. When she discovers the gate at the end of the footpath is locked, she realizes she is happy to be missing her bus as she goes back along the footpath to find Jeff waiting there.
