Manifest Destiny #8

Two figures — a Native American woman gripping a spear and dagger, and a wide-brimmed-hatted frontiersman armed with a scythe-like blade — stand back-to-back atop a massive, half-submerged creature, its skull breaking the waterline while something monstrous lurks in the blood-red depths below. Matthew Roberts' cover for this 2014 Skybound/Image series does a terrific job suggesting an uneasy alliance forged in the middle of something far worse than either warrior bargained for. Chris Dingess and Roberts continue to put a genuinely unsettling supernatural spin on the Lewis & Clark era, and issue #8 looks to deliver more of that grimy, dangerous frontier dread.
