“The Gong of Doom!”

Marvel's muck-encrusted Man-Thing looms large and ferocious at the center of this March 1980 cover, his glowing red eyes fixed forward as flames erupt around him and primitive-looking warriors close in with spears and clubs. A bound man and a frightened woman are caught in the chaos nearby, while the cover tagline warns that the Snowmen believe Manny will destroy them — and they just might be right. Bob Wiacek's linework gives the whole scene a raw, visceral energy that fits perfectly with Man-Thing's long-running tagline: "Whatever knows fear burns at the touch of the Man-Thing.
