Set against cold stone walls and a leaded window, the cover of Malefosse #1 — "De zwarte duivel" — immediately establishes a world of medieval tension, with a wary armored soldier and a dark-haired woman in rough linen turning toward the viewer with guarded intensity. François Dermaut's artwork is richly detailed, bringing both figures to life with a grounded, almost painterly quality that gives this Dutch-language edition real visual weight. Writer Daniel Bardet and artist Dermaut make a compelling team, and this 2020 Daedalus release is a fine entry point into what promises to be an atmospheric historical adventure.
