The issue also confirms the death of Ren, a young mutant introduced in the debut issue, and introduces Haruhi, a new supporting character, all within a globe-trotting Tokyo setting that expands the world-building of Illyana Rasputina's first-ever solo ongoing series. Taken together with issue #1, the story represents the first time Marvel committed to a full-length ongoing for Magik since her 1983–84 limited series, finally giving the character the solo platform that creators and fans had argued she deserved for decades.

Writer Ashley Allen, who had previously worked with the character in X-Men: Blood Hunt – Magik, brought Illyana Rasputina into her debut ongoing series alongside artist Germán Peralta, colorist Arthur Hesli, and letterer VC's Ariana Maher, under editor Darren Shan. The series launched in January 2025 as part of Marvel's post-Krakoa X-Men publishing line, and issue #2 — titled 'Descent' — arrived on February 12, 2025, with a cover by J. Scott Campbell. Demand was strong enough that the issue received a second printing with new variant covers by Campbell and Pablo Villalobos.
