Mage, Book Three: The Hero Denied #11

Matt Wagner's cover for this penultimate chapter of The Hero Denied speaks volumes through deliberate quiet: two silhouetted figures — a large adult with a lightning-bolt emblem on his back and a small child clutching what appears to be a heart symbol — walk hand-in-hand into the shadowy depths of a dense, fog-lit forest. The composition is achingly atmospheric, the towering trees and tangled undergrowth swallowing the pair in near-darkness while a pale green glow keeps them just visible at the center. It's a beautifully restrained image that captures the emotional weight this third volume of Mage has carried throughout 2018.
