“I Was a Fugitive From Love”

Few romance comics capture the raw sting of betrayal quite like this November 1950 issue of Lovers. Christopher Rule's cover drops us into a charged triangle: a man named Bret pulls a dark-haired woman in red close inside a warmly lit room, while outside the window a stunned young woman in a purple suit cries out "Bret! No! No!" — seeing exactly what she wasn't meant to see. With a story titled "I Was a Fugitive From Love" waiting inside, this is postwar romance comics drama at its most immediate and emotionally vivid.

Donna grew up poor, but her family suddenly inherited a fortune. She falls in love with wealthy Roger, only to learn his father’s bank is about to go broke and they’re counting on Donna’s money to save it. Donna leaves town for an “inexpensive resort,” where she hides her economic status. Donna falls in love with Milt, but mistakenly thinks he’s also a fortune hunter. Milt explains that he’s rich, and hid his wealth to discourage women gold-diggers. Since they’re financially compatible, Donna and Milt can wed.
