Alison rejects Tom's marriage proposal because she loves Jerry, who had managed the family oyster fisheries since her father died. When she discovers that her sister is going to marry Jerry, she runs down to the hut where the men work, hoping to find Jerry. Instead she finds Tom. When she rejects him again, he locks the door and attacks her. Later, when Mary finds Alison sobbing on the beach, she takes Alison home and gives her a sedative brewed from the herbs in her cottage. Mary asks Alison who attacked her and in her drugged induced state, Alison says it was Jerry.
