Jill arrives in England from Australia, determined to pay off the debt her dead parents owed to her grandfather that had prompted him to swear he would never have a Murphy in his house again. But she soon learns that her grandfather, the owner of a prosperous cotton mill, had always regretted what he had done and wanted to make it up to Jill. Instead, she asks he for a job in his mill, keeping their relationship a secret. She soon falls for a young engineer with strong political views. Then she gets involved in discovering the source of the leakage of the company's designs to a competitor.
